I don't go to this place too often, but it really is a very good breakfast diner in this town.
The service is efficient, the prices are reasonable compared to other places. They don't surprise you with a new menu with yet another round of inflated prices like so many other restaurants have done since covid.
I went with a Western omelet and coffee. She asked if cheddar cheese is a good choice? I said sure. Unfortunately, there was no cheese on or in the omelet! I don't know why? Not complaining though
Coffee cups were small, but they weren't slow on the refills. I got basic hash browns on the side and opted for the biscuits instead of toast. Biscuits were a bit dry.
But, all and all, service, prices and professionalism erased any of the minor complaints I had.
Worth going to.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 19, 2023Previous reviewI was here about a month ago and had a pleasant experience.
I thought I'd give it a try before business. The parking lot was pretty crowded for a weekday morning, but this place is known to host local groups. Mostly older folks. When I walked in I saw quite a few big round tables full of seniors. No one was eating yet, so I was afraid this could slow things down and I had an appointment within the hour.
So I asked the waitress and she stated that most of these tables have already eaten, so she assured me there won't be a slowdown. She was right, food came in about 5 minutes. I've waited longer at McDonald's on some mornings.
I had a no-frills breakfast, eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. Most restaurants around here will offer you American Fries (or home fries) instead of hashbrowns, I usually get that because I consider them fresher. Russ' does no offer that option. Just your typical institutional type of hashbrowns.
Mine were real crispy. Coffee price is the same as it was last time....I remember $1.89. Everywhere else is at least $2.
I ate my food and was ready to leave since I was in a hurry, the waitress asked if I'd like another cup of coffee, when I told her I was sort of in a hurry for a business appointment, she offered the next cup in a "to go" cup. I thought that was a nice gesture.Aug 24, 2023Previous reviewIt's been a while since I ate at Russ', so I gave it another try.
I really never can complain about breakfast from Russ'.
Always consistent.
This time around I got the Southern Omelet. 3 eggs stuffed with ham, hashbrowns, green peppers, onions, cheese and topped with gravy.
Good portion there. On another plate they give you a pile of hashbrowns and toast. $11.50.
As far as service goes, they seemed to be well staffed with servers, although I did sit there with an empty coffee cup for sometime before the server refilled it.
Lot of big tables with groups of senior citizens having their morning get together, but that didn't seem to slow anything down.Nov 18, 2022Previous reviewRuss' has been around this area forever. Similar to Denny's IMO. They are not open for business on Sunday, something to do with their religion I'm told.
This is old-school restaurant service, they have a couple of dining rooms and I've never had to wait for a table. The menu is nothing fancy and they make a decent breakfast. I ordered a meat lovers breakfast. 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, toast. For whatever reason they only brought me three sausages, no bacon. No big deal I guess. $8. Not a bad price compared to some of the places you find near downtown.
If you're looking for service, good value and decent food, with no problem parking, this is a good bet. - Harry R.Gold Coast, Chicago, IL0105131Jan 5, 2024Updated review
My experience with Russ' is consistency.
That is a thing so many eateries seem to be missing nowadays, unless you're at a huge FF franchise.
Only once have I had to leave Russ's because they had no tables available. They are notorious for hosting huge groups of (mostly senior citizens) diners.
Service has always been good, so has the food. Also they have the "Dutch Deals" economically priced meals. I mean I got 2 eggs, 2 sausages and a pancake for $7.50. Not bad, I'd say. Very tasty too.
Russ's is old school and that's a good thing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 28, 2023Previous reviewI think this place gets a bad rap from the younger crowd.
In fact, I used to think so too, but with menu prices all over town going up faster than real estate prices, I'm trying to find the best bang for my buck.
I think the fact that the patrons here all seem to be older....like retirees.
Nothing wrong with that, but some may mean that this place is outdated.
Well, actually it is. Nothing remodeled in years, in fact it is old school coffee shop....just like Denny's or Perkin's used to be.
I was actually going to eat at Two Yolks and had second thoughts and decided to give Russ' a shot. It's been about year since I had breakfast there.
Place was a little less than half full, I was seated promptly, with a server immediately taking my drink order. By the time she came back less than a minute later, I picked out my order of eggs and sausage. Ordered sour dough toast, also ordered the home fries instead of the institutional style hash browns....wrong choice. Those home fries were chunks of potato deep fried with little flavor. I prefer mine pan fried. Other than that food was good.
Service was spot on. Wifi was available.
Unless they join the parade of menu price raisers, I will be back sooner than later.Mar 30, 2022Previous reviewIt's not my first choice, but it was a Monday, and in GH a lot of the local diners don't open. Since Russ's is not open Sundays, I knew they would be open. Lot of big tables with groups of seniors are very obvious, but that doesn't seem to slow down service like a group can throw the kitchen into pandamonia.
Got seated immediately, waitress was attentive, and kept my coffee cup filled. I ordered a basic breakfast...2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 1 pancake. $7.
I could have gotten something similar for maybe 50 cents cheaper.
Coffee was $1.89, they even asked me if I'd like a cup to-go. The only other place in this town that does this is Morningstar. - Tara S.Grand Rapids, MI209656Feb 15, 2024
This is a west Michigan staple isn't it? I have been coming here on and off my whole life, mostly with grandparents. Good breakfast food, decent burgers, and good fried chicken. I love the apple dumpling! Highly recommend! Generally good service, but it can get busy at times. Family restaurant, that hadn't changed much over the years. Nice place to visit from time to time.

Quick, cheap, staff know you by name. Eggs, meat and potatoe. Kind of hard to go wrong with that!

Here for my weekly Bible study. Our server was fantastically attentive. The food is always good, but find it expensive for what it is. It was an enjoyable venue with great ambiance.

I read so many positive things about Russ's on social media. I finally tried it. Never again. The Hot Turkey Sandwich was horrible. I have no idea what one would need to do to turkey to turn it into a paste, but that's what was on this sandwich. It looked like sandwich spread or deviled ham--only turkey. If I didn't have teeth, it would have been a convenient choice. The meat was bland and pasty and disgusting. The potatoes were powdered and it was all covered in gelatinous "homemade" beef gravy. I wasn't expecting Ruth's Chris, but I didn't think Big Boy level quality would be such a stretch.

We went to Russ for dessert and they had 6 people waiting before us. There were several empty tables and they said that they were busy. To busy to find a table for us so we left
