Q:
Does anyone know what roaster their coffee is? Went 2 days in a row for breakfast when I was in Grand Haven and I can't stop thinking about the dark roast. Would love to buy some if possible
A:
The dark roast (which is from Herman's Boy in Rockford, MI) is made especially for Morning Star. They are the only place that carries that blend. You can buy the beans or grounds at Morning Star!

Walked up and got our name on the list for brunch. They took our number and said they'd text when the table was ready. Estimated 30-minute wait, actual 40.
We took the opportunity to look up the menu and reviews while waiting. Once seated, we were able to order immediately. The coffee was brought out in an insulated carafe for wxtra pours, with a side of cream. The gal who helped us also brought 2 forks out so we could share the roll. It had a fabulous crunchy outer, yet tender inside and smothered in a tangy-sweet cream cheese frosting. Next came the mains. Mine could have used some kick, but there was hot sauce available &, I suppose, it's easier to add more heat than it is to take it away. The eggs were perfectly poached & I loved the naked option. Bonus for letting me swap out potatoes for the fruit. After reading how great they were, I did expect some sort of twist, but there isn't one. Yes, they were good, just normal. I stole a few bites of bacon & it was fabulous. I'd guess they bake it to render it and get it crispy without burning it. The hubs said the chorizo hash was great. I wouldn't know cuz he didn't share!
All in all, I feel like it was a great value.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 4Oh no 0 - Harry R.Gold Coast, Chicago, IL0105131Jan 22, 2024Updated review
I don't go to Morningstar that often, every now and then when I'm going out to breakfast with others. But today, I'm by myself and even though last time I thought they might have overcharged me, I decided to have breakfast.
Besides Russ' Restaurant had big groups waiting to be seated.
So here I am at Morningstar, parked across the street.
First thing I noticed, they did not do a very good job of cleaning the snow off the sidewalk.....unlike their neighbor, J-Dubs wine shop which did an excellent clearing of the white stuff.
Menu prices still looked the same, so I ordered what I got last time. Eggs & Ham. You can read the previous review I did on the food since it did not change.
My biggest complaint, besides the 40-50 year old music heard over the speakers.... was being gouged!
The menu states $9.25. I was charged 9.95. WTF?
Next, coffee: $3.50. What do think they are? Starbucks?
Then a non-cash adjustment! (see photo)
So my breakfast with tip was about $17....and I just got a basic meat and eggs breakfast.
I'm done with this place. I'll wait for a table at Russ' next time and save my self 5 bucks.
Plus, Russ' actually has a parking lot.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 23, 2023Previous reviewI ate breakfast here back in the Spring, the prices were reasonable and the service was great, the kitchen was rather slow. I didn't have to wait for a table.
So now towards the end of summer, I'm back again. Was seated immediately.
Morningstar is an older restaurant. It is laid out in sections, which perhaps gives it a more intimate ambience, but I think make it difficult for the servers to get a good eye on the room. Sometimes there is no server in sight. The music on the overhead speakers is all over the road.....70's funk into 40's standards back to 80's rock! But when the place gets crowded you can barely hear it.
First thing I noticed on the menu is that prices have shot up! The $7.95
2 egg breakfast is now $9.25. Besides the eggs it come with a good size sausage patty (or bacon), redskin potatoes (or fruit) and toast. The plate is garnished with a chunk of orange. That's what I ordered. I did not see what coffee costs (I might have made a mistake there).
The food arrived very quick, was tasty and seemed fresh. Too many places lately the potatoes tasted old and the toast stale....not at Morningstar.
Again they offered me (what I thought was complimentary) a coffee to go. I graciously accepted.
My check arrived....my $9.25 breakfast came to a total of $14.26 ! Why there was a $5 difference? I have no idea. My fault for not looking over the bill. Was the coffee that expensive? Was the coffee to-go an add-on? IDK.
I paid the bill left a tip and went away puzzled.Apr 30, 2023Previous reviewThe last time I was here was by myself....I was in and out quickly, with prompt service.
This time, there are two of us. I drop off my breakfast companion at the front door to get us a table while I find a parking spot. This place doesn't have an exclusive lot, but there are spaces, a few doors down, on the street or across the street.
It was before 9am, Saturday morning, we were immediately seated and greeted by an enthusiastic server.
Drinks....water and coffee arrived quickly, we gave our order and there was quite a wait for food to arrive. Maybe because I got an omelette this time instead of a basic breakfast?
The place started getting busy by the time our food arrived, about 25 minutes later. My Denver omelette was tasty, my friends waffles and fruit looked more like a dessert. I can say the prices have remained somewhat stable. I say that because it seems other places have had the prices creep up every 6 months. Morningstar used to be a bit more expensive then other places, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Hopefully it stays that way.
I took a complimentary coffee to go.
By the time we left, about an hour later, there already was a crowd waiting for tables.
My only suggestion for improvement is perhaps to speed things up in the kitchen.Jan 9, 2022Previous reviewI'm back to this place, been a long time. Rendezvous down the street closed.
So I give Morningstar a try. It's a weekday, so there is no wait. Usually on weekends or in the summer you can wait 30 or more minutes for a table.
Not me. I'm there to eat, not wait.
But I was immediately seated on this day.
Wait staff was prompt.
I ordered coffee, they brough a small carafe, That's a good thing, I don't have to wait if I need a refill, or hunt someone down.
I got a basic meal, Ham and Eggs. They have some exotic things on the menu, it that's your thing, but then the prices a bit higher. I'm just not into all those Tex Mex plates.
The music they were playing was confusing, some sort jazz-folk fusion.
I guess they want the sound to be yuppie or nuvo. It didn't work for me.
They asked if I wanted a coffee to go, for the road? I declined, but thought that was a thoughtful gesture.
Yeah, I'll be back, if I don't have to wait.Feb 9, 2016Previous reviewThe food is better than the run of the mill diner....but the wait!
Their customers never seem to have a problem waiting for a table.
I do. 15 minutes is too long, especially when there are other places in town.
Like I said, not run of the mill fare....although they do have the usual bacon and eggs if that's your thing.
But be prepared.....$$$! - Nov 6, 2023
We decided to stop in for breakfast based on all the great yelp reviews. We stopped in early Sat morning and we had a very short wait. I had one Michigan blueberry pancake. One was more than enough, it was huge!!
My husband had the Denver omelet. They provide a pot of coffee for the table, which is always nice and you do not see much anymore. I noticed many people had tea and it was served in beautiful tea pots.
Our server was great and very attentive. A wonderful breakfast experience.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Oct 6, 2023
Packed!!! And for good reason! This place was delicious and inventive. My corn cake Benny was wonderful - not to mention unique - and I am bummed I don't live here so I can go back every weekend
There were four of us and everyone loved their breakfast choice, but I was too busy chowing down to remember what they ordered ... sorry, not sorry
AND... despite being packed, those servers were sliding between tables, topping off beverages, checking-in and just overall smashing it in terms of service! Kudos to that excellent team!
AND... they gave me a refill on coffee to go, which was much needed and very much appreciated!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Bill S.Waycross, GA649Apr 27, 2024
Best Bloody Mary ever. One of the best breakfast spots I've found. Great food, great value.

This place is your quintessential frenetic, and very much worthwhile- breakfast/brunch experience.....and yes, it's worth the wait!
The food is awesome, the service is excellent, and the ambiance is on par with your bright, friendly & buzzing morning cafes! If you're looking for peace & quiet, and less humans to start your day, go elsewhere....for your sake and everyone else's.
We were just passing through. However, if this was my stomping grounds, I would make this my weekly haunt!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - H R.MI, MI0103110Aug 9, 2023Updated review
Okay, I'll admit I was never a big fan of this restaurant, but had many family and friends who liked this place, so I patronized it. My complaint was not so much about the food....as it is a good quality meal. I was more disappointed in the long wait times to get a table, I guess a testament to their popularity, but I don't like to wait around for a table.
I also didn't like their prices. I realize this is Grand Haven and they like to take advantage....especially the tourists.
I've now changed my mind about this place. While I always liked the food, I just didn't like to wait to be seated. Now I arrive before 8am. Rarely have to wait. But the biggest thing I will commend this restaurant for.....IS NOT raising prices so quickly.
Rendezvous was right down the street, and they had absolutely the lowest breakfast prices in town, except for fast food. Never had to wait either.
But now Rendezvous is shut down. I now try a variety of local spots and it seems everytime I go to these places, they hand out a new menu from the last visit.....with HIGHER PRICES. Pine Street Cafe I thinked raised the price of their basic breakfast 3 times in one year. C'mon!
My latest experience at Morningstar I ordered the omelette. The Cadillac, with sour dough toast and they brought redskin potatoes with a pot of coffee. Omelette $10.75, coffee $2.50.
This same meal, (although not nearly as good, IMO) at Pine Street Cafe would cost $12+$2.99...and I'd be charged extra for the sour dough!
So Morningstar, despite their lack of parking gets a rare 5 star review from me. Good service, Good prices, Quality food. Just get there early to get a table without waiting.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 17, 2022Previous reviewI've been to Morningstar before. It can get crowded, especially on the weekend during the summer. But I'm there early on a Saturday.
When I entered, there was no hostess, then someone popped up out of the blue and asked "has anyone helped you?" I said no and was paraded around the restaurant until a table was found. I would have eaten at the counter (I was by myself) had I known they had one. The stools at the counter seemed comfortable.
I was seated at a booth and my gosh, the bench was so close to the table, that I had to push the table away! Good thing I did not have a dining companion because there would have not been room for another on the other side!
My waitress showed up promptly and was very soft spoken. Pleasant but seemed rather timid because you could barely hear her.
This place is noisy, there is music in the background, that you cannot hear anyways and the ceiling is high. So to be honest, I had no idea what questions the young server was asking. I know she wanted to tell me about the specials, I declined....probably wouldn't be able to decipher what she was saying. I didn't want to seem rude and tell here to speak up, so I just told her eggs and ham. They bring you a carafe of coffee, so you don't have to keep looking around for a server when your cup goes low. I believe they are the only place in town that does this.
One thing I did notice was that the wait staff was young, and they were all very focused on their jobs. A lot of places have these older women who get chatting with the regulars and lose sight of their other tables and here you sit waiting on coffee. Not here.
Food arrived promptly
My breakfast appeared fresh, appetizing and definitely not greasy spoon.
Not a lot of salt either. That's good. I could add salt if I wanted more on my own. Although I ordered sour dough toast, I ended up with rye....a little burnt. Not big deal.
The potatoes....redskins were a little burnt as well. But there enough non-burnt ones to satisfy me.
The meal I thought was reasonably priced, $7.95.....but coffee was $2.50, probably the most expensive in town.
There were other menu items priced a lot more than that....the specials menu board up front advertised some fruity pancakes in the 10-11 dollar range.
There were other egg offerings, maybe I'll try those in the future.
Parking is street, or across the street. No big deal, but some people have a problem with that extra walking.
I will be back in the future as long as there is not a long wait. - Ann R.Grand Haven, MI02Apr 1, 2024
