Event Description: During the past couple of years, citizens and officials of Grand Haven have debated the future of the large coal tower on the edge of Chinook Pier. Now that it has been decided to preserve this structure and efforts to do so are underway, it is appropriate to review what this thing is, what it represents, and why it is historically significant. For nearly a century Grand Haven was a major railroad center with multiple railroad companies operating dozens of daily trains in and out of the city. Former Grand Haven history teacher Paul Trap will review our local railroad heritage with a focus on the tortured past of the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railroad, the railroad that built the coal tower, as part of a major rail center and terminal for both trains and car ferries.
