Event Description: Imagine the sky filled with birds of such numbers that they darken the sun, their passage from first glimpse to final view taking hours. That was the scene with the passenger pigeons that called West Michigan home for untold years, until diners developed a taste for them and hunters discovered a lucrative market between 1870 and 1900. Spring Lake artist Lewis Cross saw it as his mission to preserve their memory as a reminder of the delicate balance between man and nature. In addition to preserving the memory of the pigeons, Lewis’s hundreds of paintings provide dramatic recreations of other local scenes, events, and people. Dr. Wallace Ewing brings these paintings to life in his presentation of Lewis Cross’s life.
